Dancing on Ice - ice skating in the East Midlands

Dancing on Ice – ice-skating in the East Midlands

Now, I’m not generally a fan of reality TV programmes, especially those of the “celebrity” genre… but I have always had a soft spot for Dancing on Ice, mainly because it’s the only time ice skating makes it onto the TV outside Winter Olympics season. And there are only so many times one girl can watch a Torvill and Dean video purchased circa Christmas 1988.

Torvill I ain’t – Ice skating in the East Midlands

As a child, I was obsessed with Noel Streatfeild’s White Boots novel and I’ve harboured a not-so-secret desire to be an figure skating champion ever since. Unfortunately, I lacked the scarily ambitious pushy mum to get beyond a few wobbly laps of our local rink.

As an adult, I signed up to Skate UK classes and have spent many enjoyable hours learning how to go forwards and backwards and round and round. Unfortunately my local ice rink has closed down, so now I have had to abandon my ambition to master a triple axel and instead make do with taking a twirl around London’s outdoor ice-rinks whenever the opportunity presents — casting directors out there, take note: TopThingsToDo is definitely available for the next series of Dancing on Ice. Okay, so I’m not a celebrity but I did once get a signed photograph from Jon Bonjovi (all my deepest, darkest secrets are coming out now… bye bye integrity!) and I’ve been interviewed by a regional French newspaper and that’s got to count for something, right?

If, like me, you fancy joining the likes of Chloe Madeley and Kerry Katona, then get your skates on and get down to your local rink… See you there!
