Life's a beach - even in the office!

Summer arrives in Nottingham

Here at TopThingsToDo.co.uk we are loving the appearance of what finally seems to be – whisper it – summer. Oh, how we’ve missed it – picnics with friends, bustling beer gardens, jugs of Pimms piled high with fruit and clinking with ice, and golden evenings that seem to go on forever.

Less appealing, however, is when Monday morning rolls round again and we find ourselves back at our desks with nothing but the faint scent of sunscreen on our skin to remind ourselves of the fun we could be having. Thankfully, I sit with my back to the windows so I can pretend that it’s tipping down outside until, come 6pm, I emerge blinking, mole-like, into glorious, glorious sunshine to discover what I’ve been missing all day.

TopThingsToDo.co.uk follows Nottingham’s example

So when I heard about Nottingham Council’s plan to bring a slice of the seaside into the city centre with their Nottingham Riviera event (23 July-5 September), I was inspired. Why not bring a corner of the Caribbean to our offices in East London? A sandy haven where colleagues could roll up their trousers, feel the sand beneath their toes and enjoy a sneaky forty winks under a palm tree. Under the – admittedly bemused – stares of my fellow workers, I set about inflating beach balls, dusting off the bucket and spade and creating a tropical paradise of our very own – view the gallery (right) to see the result.

Ahhh, life on the Spitalfields Riviera – I could get used to this. Now, where did I put that surfboard?
