Boris’ bikes in Nottingham?
TopThingsToDo may have had a wee accident that has rendered us slightly less mobile than normal, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about the many bike schemes launching up and down the country. Yes, it appears that Boris and his bikes have launched a thousand cycle-hire systems and green transport charity, Sustrans, is at the helm (or should that be handlebars?) with two new initiatives launching this month in Nottingham and Lincoln – Ucycle and cycLIN.
Nottingham – on yer bike!
Sustrans is behind brand new bike scheme Ucycle Nottingham, due to touch down in Nottingham on 8 September. The scheme is aimed at increasing levels of cycling among staff and students at Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals Trust.
From September, students will be able to hire a bike for up to 12 months at competitive rates. The charity will also be running bike maintenance classes and a Bike Buddy Scheme, which will pair up less confident cyclists with experienced commuters, to encourage people to get back into the saddle.
Lincoln gets peddling!
Lincoln University will also get its very own bike hire facility, cycLIN, in September. Run jointly by Sustrans and the University of Lincoln, it will allow 69 students to pick up an Evans Pinnacle Stratus hybrid bike, complete with D-lock and lights, for the entire academic year, all for a modest deposit and loan fee. Sustrans will be leading rides around Lincoln city centre to help freshers get a feel for their new home.
