Summer fun in Nottingham

Nottingham’s Riverside Festival starts today with a host of family-friendly events, from fun fairs to musical and dance performances. Taking place along Victoria Embankment, it features an entire mile jam-packed with free activities over the whole weekend.

With a street fair, arts and crafts, dance workshops especially for kids, puppet shows and circus acts, there’s plenty going on. Not only that, there is also music from a host of World and Roots performers to get your toes tapping. The artists range from Anglo-Caribbean band The Soothsayers and Celtic strummers Shooglenifty to Turkish-inspired Dogan Mehmet and The Deerhunters. If you’re really inspired to move to the music, why not take part in the dance lessons on offer, from salsa to swing.

Fans of the fun fair will be thrilled by the rides, the stands and the candyfloss stalls. And, of course, there will also be the Dragon Boat challenge as well as the annual charity Duck Race, helping to raise finds for the Rainbow Hospice, on Sunday from 10am.

Whatever you see or do, make sure you don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display Saturday night at 10.30pm.

And if the sun shines, you can always hit the beach in Nottingham’s other summer extravaganza, the Riviera, where the seaside has been recreated in Old Market Square. See TopThingsToDo’s own recreation here.
