Science fiction facts at the National Space Centre in Leicester

The National Space Centre in Leicester has a treat in store this month, when it brings to life the best in UK Science Fiction TV. On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March, BritSciFi is the ultimate fantasy for sci-fi fans. Meet Gerry Anderson, creator of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, as well as writers from legendary TV show Doctor Who and Gareth Thomas, star of Blake’s 7. Oh, and there’ll also be some Daleks…

Not to be left out, Star Wars fans can celebrate their favourite space saga on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 May, when the National Space Centre plays host to the world’s biggest and best costuming club dedicated to these iconic films.

There’s yet more sci-fi action on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 July, as Hyde Fundraisers – which creates replica characters from science fiction for charity – celebrates the world of Doctor Who. Fans can meet characters, see special screenings, discover the many secrets of Doctor Who and jump in front of the Virtual Green Screen for a photo souvenir. All money raised goes to Children in Need.

Space race revisited at the National Space Centre in Leicester

Some 50 years after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, the National Space Centre celebrates with an exhibition compiling the many achievements of Russian space travel, including the space rocket Vostok 1, space suits for dogs, the amazing story of Yuri Gagarin and how Russia led the way in the Space Race. It all blasts off on Saturday 16 April, landing back down to earth on Friday 29 April.

But let’s not forget our part in space history! From Saturday 28 May till Sunday 5 June, the National Space Centre will also recognise Britain’s accomplishments, with a look at how Helen Sharman became the first British astronaut 20 years ago with Project Juno, and how Britain still leads the way in many areas of space exploration.

There’ll be plenty of surprises, challenges and hands-on fun.

The model-building continues on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November with Meccano Madness, an exhibition and interactive exploration of Meccano through the years.
