Ash frontlines the Headstock festival in Nottinghamshire

Ash to headline at Headstock, Nottingham

When TopThingsToDo was a teenager (all those moons ago), ‘Oh Yeah’ was one of our favourite songs and we weren’t adverse to a bit of jumping up and down and hair swishing – oh yes, we had all the dance moves down – to ‘Girl From Mars’ either. So when we heard that rock band Ash are set to headline at the brand new Headstock Festival near Nottingham on Saturday (11 September), we were filled with a nostalgic longing for the days when the summer air was soft and warm.

Headstock Festival helps Nottingham community

The Headstock Festival will take place this weekend at Newstead and Annesley Country Park, nine miles north of Nottingham, a 220-acre, eco-sensitive public park created on the site of a former mine. The festival is part of an initiative to help breathe new life into the local community, which has suffered from loss of identity and high unemployment following the closure of the mines in 1987. The locals have set up a community business, Newstead Enterprise – with the help of the Village SOS programme, a joint initiative between the BBC and the Big Lottery Fund – to organise and run the festival, with all proceeds to be re-invested in the local area. Over 100 volunteers have signed up to staff the event.

Heaps of talent at Headstock, Nottingham

So not only is Ash playing, but visitors will also be helping the local community get back on its feet… If that isn’t reason enough for you to book a ticket and get yourself to Nottingham, the full Headstock line-up includes Field Music, The Beat, Frightened Rabbit and (wait for it) Newstead Brass Band. Yes, you heard me. Now it may be the end of summer, and TopThingsToDo may have grown out of school skirts and summer blouses… but we just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to rock out to Ash et al. See you there.
